On The Road Problems - December 2004

Well, on my way to work this morning, I pass the familiar supermarket and roundabout. I am listening to some music (on my personal stereo - Daisy has no radio), then suddenly.. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP

The Horn decides to STAY ON. I thump the centre of the steering wheel, in a vain attempt to kill the noise........ but no. If Daisy wasn't getting enough attention from passers by, she certainly is now! - The noise was deafening. Got to work and turned off the engine....... aaaaaaahhhh.... quiet.

Nipped out at lunch time to see if I could diagnose the problem. It did not take long to discover that the horn relay was dead.

When power was fed to the relay, the arm made contact all the time.

This is the culprit. Its located on the right hand side, just behind the right hand horn (as daisy is a deluxe, she has dual horns - yes... that means EVEN LOUDER).

I have marked the connections on the picture

H is HORN

B is Battery

S is switch

and earth is fed from the case of the relay, given that Daisy is positive earth. Now, as I don't work very far away from a Lucas Warehouse, I disconnected the relay, and took a wander round. Lets just say that Mr 'Lucas Warehouse' shook his head many times. "Not seen one of these in years" he said, "especially a 3 terminal". "Hmmmmm" I thought.

However, after about 25minutes of looking at the wiring diagrams (from the 100E workshop manual) and looking at the Lucas stock catalogue, we did manage to find a metal relay that would do the job, only it had 5 terminals. But not to worry, as I will show the wiring.

Horn Relay - SRB111 6RA Lucas Warehouse £15.00

So that's what you need to buy to replace the horn relay. Notice that the terminals on the new relay have different codes, however, thanks to Mr 'Lucas Warehouse' we have a conversion chart for you ...

OLD RELAY TERMINAL SYMBOLS EQUIVALENT NEW RELAY TERMINAL SYMBOLS
H = C1 (this has 2 terminals on the new relay - just use any ONE of them)
B = C2
S = W1
+ earth via bodywork = W2 ( you will have to connect a wire from this terminal back to the bodywork for earth)

Well...................... here comes Christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of Daisy's followers.
