I have given her a thorough check over, and have begun on the work.

This will be a new experience for me, I am aware of all the 'bits' within the engine, but, I have never known how they work together, and in some cases, what they actually do ! - So to work. I bought a car cover for when she is outside, this has been great. as the bits I remove I can store in the garage. As the cover could be on for some weeks, I purchased the 'breathable' cover type. This means that water will not build up under the cover. I have found a local 'Lucas' warehouse, which has helped with the sourcing for various bits a pieces. Spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm and oil filter. It took a couple of days for them to get the equipment (as she is a 1957 girl!!), but at least I now have them. I will be keeping a spreadsheet of costs, which I shall publish in time. So first things first, get the air filter off, which resembles a tin of beans!

The RED arrows are not a good sign. Reversing the car in to my drive, and this happened!! - The suspension ball joint was so badly corroded, that it broke away from the suspension rod, and collapsed down beside it!! - The parts that the arrows are pointing at, should be on top, not side by side. Lucky it happened on my drive, and not a 60mph!!! - Two things resulted because of this, firstly, I borrowed some axel stands, and secondly, swore a lot.

Axel stands in place, and off with the wheel to get a better look. Not good news. The corrosion is so severe, that I will have to replace the suspension tracking rod.

This diagram (with thanks from www.smallfordspares.com) show the problem. The red arrow shows what has snapped on my Anglia, unfortunately, this is a single unit assembly, I have had to purchase the entire unit assembly. Looking at the other side of the car, I decided to go the whole hog, and purchase BOTH sides. Here is a wee list of the things I have bought so far, I will not include the costs at this stage.

I think that's it. I am only now realising the job at hand. What have I let myself in for !!!

There is no real 'plan' that I am working to on the anglia (Daisy - as good a name as any). I appear to be working on several wee problems all at the same time, and flit between them. I didn't realise that I was doing this, is was only once I started this log. The above picture is the air filter. The bean can, as I am calling it. My wee problem with this unit is, that although in good condition, I want to clean the wire filter (brillo pad). In order to do this I need to get it out of the bean can. Not an easy task, I spent over an hour trying to get the wire out...... I shall try again tomorrow....!

This show a better picture of the damaged ball joint. The center screw (pole) has snapped completely off.

As I remove some of the bolts, I am starting to get a wee collection, lets hope I put them back in the right order !!

My 'stuff' from smallfordspares came today. They look new... Look at this suspension rod, you see the pole sticking up on the left? - That's what has broken on daisy, and its going to be a bugger to replace.

Track rod end seems fine, and has obviously been replaced recently.

Bugger, Bugger, Bugger, Bugger, Bugger, Bugger, Bugger, Damn bold has broken. This is the holder for the rad hose and flange!!! Know I need a bolt extractor..... ho humm.

This book has been a god send. If you are doing up one of these old beasties GET THIS BOOK.
